By Brazil Stock Guide – Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. (2238.HK; 601238.SS) opened an engineering, research and development center in São Paulo as the Chinese automaker moves to deepen its presence in Brazil, one of the world’s largest auto markets and a key battleground for electrified vehicles.
The new unit will oversee portfolio planning, product development and market launch activities, with a focus on adapting GAC vehicles to local road conditions, regulation, infrastructure and consumer preferences. The center will also support supplier localization and future production at HPE Automotores’ plant in Catalão, in the central state of Goiás.
GAC said its Brazilian engineering work had already begun before the formal launch of the center. A local team took part in the adaptation and validation of models recently introduced in the country, including the GS3 and Aion UT, carrying out technical adjustments designed for the Brazilian market.
The São Paulo operation will conduct market and technology studies, assess regulatory requirements, run product clinics and consumer research, and evaluate competitiveness. Those efforts will feed into the company’s strategy for launching additional vehicles from different GAC lines in Brazil.
On the product side, the engineering team will develop technical attributes tailored to Brazilian conditions. The work includes durability tests, calibration, drivability, emissions, homologation, advanced driver-assistance systems, suspension, steering, braking and NVH — industry shorthand for noise, vibration and harshness.
The center will also work on lower-emission mobility technologies, including flex-fuel, hybrid and electric vehicles. GAC also cited the development of REEV technology, or range-extended electric vehicles, in which an electric drivetrain is supported by a combustion generator that extends vehicle range.
The company said the launch of the center is tied to its broader investment plan for Brazil and to the project for local production at HPE Automotores’ Catalão facility. HPE Automotores is the official representative of Mitsubishi Motors in Brazil and operates manufacturing activities in the country, according to the company’s website.
Brazil is one of only two locations outside China where GAC will have an engineering, research and development center, alongside Europe. The move highlights the strategic role of Brazil in the automaker’s international expansion and in its push into cleaner mobility technologies.
“The creation of the Engineering, Research and Development Center represents an important milestone for GAC in Brazil. Our goal is to develop solutions aligned with the needs of Brazilian consumers, helping our vehicles deliver performance, efficiency and technology suited to the local reality. More than adapting products, we want to actively participate in the evolution of mobility in the country, strengthening the national automotive ecosystem through innovation, supplier development and the training of specialized talent,” said Leonardo Lukacs, GAC’s director of engineering, research, development and manufacturing.
