Light concession renewal

By Brazil Stock Guide – Mayors from 31 municipalities in Rio de Janeiro state are urging Brazil’s power regulator ANEEL to fast-track the renewal of Light’s electricity distribution concession. The group presented a petition in Brasília on Tuesday during a meeting with ANEEL’s director-general, Sandoval Feitosa.

The document signed by local leaders expresses “unconditional support” for extending Light’s concession, set to expire in June 2026, according to Agência iNFRA. The company, controlled by shareholders through Light S.A. (BVMF:LIGT3), has already requested a 30-year renewal from both ANEEL and Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy.

The petition highlights what the mayors described as “clear operational progress” by the utility and argues that a renewed contract would unlock a “broad investment program” in the power grid. Among the signatories are Rio de Janeiro’s mayor Eduardo Paes, as well as leaders from populous cities such as Duque de Caxias and Nova Iguaçu.

The current concession ends in mid-2026. Until then, ANEEL will evaluate the company’s request and decide whether to extend Light’s control over power distribution in the region.
