By Brasil Stock Guide – Brazil’s federal government created a new department dedicated to electric vehicles inside the Ministry of Mines and Energy, known as MME, as the country prepares for rising demand from electrified transport.
The Department of Electromobility was established by decree published Thursday in the Official Gazette, according to Renan Monteiro’s report. The unit will be responsible for proposing, executing and evaluating public policies related to EV charging stations, the market for vehicle batteries and associated electric infrastructure.
The new department will also be tasked with promoting energy efficiency across power grids. Under the decree, this includes policies aimed at demand management and the integration of distributed energy resources.
The unit will have nine positions, including a director and a coordinator-general.
Brazil’s Ten-Year Energy Plan estimates that the country’s fleet of light electrified vehicles may grow exponentially, reaching 3.7 million units by 2035. Electricity demand linked to the segment could rise from 627 gigawatt-hours in 2025 to 7.8 terawatt-hours over 10 years.
Mines and Energy Minister Alexandre Silveira had previously said publicly that he was studying a dedicated segment within the ministry’s structure to handle electromobility.
The department will also be responsible for fostering the integration and interoperability of batteries, distributed generation systems and energy storage solutions with electric grids, in coordination with competent government agencies and entities.
Brazil’s 2026 Strategic Electricity Agenda, which outlines key actions to secure energy supply this year, includes an unprecedented battery auction expected in the second quarter. The industry is awaiting publication of the auction guidelines by the MME, which had previously been signaled for April.
Other responsibilities of the Department of Electromobility include coordinating with public agencies to support research, development and technological innovation in the sector.
The department will also support the development of domestic technologies for electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles and vehicles powered by sustainable fuels.
It will help inform national energy planning, with a view to integrating electromobility into the power system.
The unit will propose, execute and evaluate policies for the reuse and environmentally adequate disposal of EV batteries.
It will also coordinate strategic programs and initiatives to develop and expand Brazil’s electric mobility ecosystem.
The department will be responsible for coordinating electromobility policies at the federal, state, district and municipal levels, as well as among agencies and entities of the federal public administration.
