By Brazil Stock Guide – Cia Energética de Minas Gerais SA (Cemig, BVMF: CMIG4) reached a record number of retail clients in Brazil’s free energy market. In July, the state-controlled utility surpassed 2,658 active clients and delivered 192 average megawatts (MWm), cementing its position as the country’s leading power retailer.
Cemig also became the first energy trader in Brazil to exceed 10,000 consumer units under the liberalized regime known as the Free Contracting Environment (ACL). The achievement underscores two decades of participation since the ACL’s creation in the early 2000s, according to Valor Econômico.
“The company remains active in the free market with the same intensity that has guaranteed us leadership since the mid-2000s,” said Sérgio Lopes, Cemig’s vice president of commercialization. “Over the years, we’ve signed supply contracts with some of the country’s most important clients, consolidating our role as the largest player in the sector.”
The expansion comes after regulators created the “retail trader” model in 2023 to simplify access to the ACL. Medium, small and large companies can now migrate with reduced bureaucracy, potentially cutting electricity bills by as much as 35% while securing renewable energy certificates.
“With the retail free market, thousands of potential clients nationwide can contract services with quality and continuity guarantees, significant discounts and increased competitiveness,” Lopes said.
Cemig, recognized internationally for its governance and financial strength, has built a reputation for technical expertise and innovation. The company also supports clients during the transition to the ACL with free consumption analysis, tailored savings simulations and specialized follow-up.
