Banco Central, Central Bank

By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil’s Central Bank said the country’s Pix instant-payments network set a new daily record on Black Friday, processing 297.4 million transactions worth R$166.2 billion on November 28. The previous record, reached on September 5, was 290 million transactions totaling R$164.8 billion.

Black Friday Pushes New Peaks
Both the volume and the value moved through Pix surpassed earlier highs, driven by intense online and in-store traffic as retailers, marketplaces and fintechs relied on the system to speed up checkout and avoid traditional card fees. The surge reinforces how consumer-driven flows now represent a growing share of Pix’s operational load.

Pix as Retail Infrastructure
The new highs highlight Pix’s status as the backbone of Brazil’s real-time payments ecosystem, supporting millions of small-ticket purchases while maintaining system stability. Adoption continues to deepen among households, merchants and digital platforms, turning major retail events into large-scale stress tests.

A System That Shapes Competition
Launched in 2020 as public digital infrastructure, Pix continues to pressure incumbent fee structures and accelerate competition across banking and payments. Repeated record days reflect the system’s strategic importance and ongoing expansion into new features such as recurring payments and future cross-border pilots.

Central Bank Expands Consumer-Protection Tools
Separately, Brazil’s Central Bank launched BC Protege+ on December 1, a free service that allows individuals and companies to block the opening of new accounts or their inclusion as account holders or representatives. The measure adds a new layer of protection against identity fraud, requiring all financial institutions to check the system before any account opening in deposit, savings or prepaid accounts.

Safeguards Against Identity Fraud
The initiative is part of a broader cross-agency push to strengthen fraud-prevention mechanisms. Users can activate or deactivate the protection at any time through the Central Bank’s “Meu BC” portal with a verified gov.br account. Institutions must notify consumers when protection is active and record all consultations, giving users visibility into which entities accessed their CPF or CNPJ and for what purpose.
