By Brazil Stock Guide – Brazil is moving ahead with a new intermodal transport hub at Recife’s international airport, allocating 60 million reais ($12 million) to improve ground access and streamline passenger flows at one of the country’s busiest terminals outside the Southeast.

The project forms part of a broader 640 million–real investment program focused on expanding operating capacity, upgrading infrastructure and improving the passenger experience at the airport, which serves as a key gateway to Brazil’s Northeast. The intermodal terminal is designed to strengthen links between the airport and the city, integrating multiple modes of transport in a single facility.

The planned structure will cover about 20,000 square meters and concentrate access to urban buses, taxis, ride-hailing services and private vehicles. The design also includes connections to cycling routes and improvements to surrounding public spaces, aimed at easing congestion and encouraging active mobility.

Airport operator Aena Brasil, a subsidiary of Spain-based Aena S.M.E. SA (AENA.MC), said the project is structured for long-term demand growth and will enhance both mobility and the overall passenger experience. The construction contractor is expected to be hired in March, a step that should accelerate the pace of works.

Recife’s airport has seen passenger volumes approach 10 million a year, consolidating its role as a logistics and tourism hub for the Northeast. The intermodal terminal is intended to support that growth by organizing surface transport, reducing bottlenecks and improving access for travelers and workers.

Beyond operational upgrades, the investment package includes measures to preserve historically protected areas around the airport. Plans call for the restoration of nearby public spaces, protection of artistic panels and the addition of cycling infrastructure developed in coordination with the city government.

Officials say the combined projects reinforce Recife airport’s strategic importance for regional connectivity, business attraction and urban development, positioning the terminal as a driver of economic activity and tourism in Pernambuco.
