By Brazil Stock Guide – Rede D’Or São Luiz (B3: RDOR3) has received authorization from Brazil’s Ministry of Education (MEC) to develop a new medical school in the city of Rio de Janeiro, marking the hospital group’s entry into the formal training of physicians and expanding its broader healthcare ecosystem.

According to a notice to the market released Friday, the initiative will be carried out with the support and leadership of Instituto D’Or de Pesquisa e Ensino (IDOR), the company’s research and education arm. Once the remaining regulatory steps are completed, the program is expected to admit 100 medical students per year.

The project reflects Rede D’Or’s long-term strategy of integrating hospital care, clinical research and academic training within the same institutional platform.

Building a healthcare ecosystem

Rede D’Or has spent years building a growing research infrastructure through IDOR, which operates across areas such as neuroscience, oncology and intensive care medicine. Creating its own medical school represents a natural extension of that model.

By participating directly in the training of physicians, the company can strengthen its pipeline of medical talent while reinforcing its academic and research capabilities.

Large hospital systems in the United States and Europe have long adopted similar structures, where healthcare providers maintain affiliated medical schools or academic centers that combine education, research and patient care.

Addressing talent shortages

Brazil has expanded the number of medical schools significantly over the past two decades, yet the country still faces challenges related to the distribution and quality of trained physicians, particularly outside major metropolitan areas.

Rede D’Or said the initiative aligns with its strategic vision of contributing to the high-level training of medical professionals capable of serving the Brazilian population.

For the company, the new school may also enhance its ability to attract physicians and researchers by offering opportunities that combine clinical practice, teaching and scientific research within the same network.

Beyond hospitals

The move comes as Rede D’Or continues to broaden its presence across Brazil’s healthcare sector. The company has expanded aggressively in hospitals, oncology networks and diagnostic services over the past decade.

Launching a medical school adds another layer to the group’s model: beyond operating hospitals, Rede D’Or is positioning itself as a participant in the formation of the next generation of Brazilian physicians, strengthening its long-term influence across the healthcare system.
